The health and pleasure of a natural scent…

Have you ever noticed how we all perceive the value and importance of our senses differently?

Typically, the sense people view as the most important is hearing – like hearing an absolute pitch or being able to hear danger approach from miles away – then often followed by sight and taste.

For most people their sense of smell seems less important – unless they use it for work, for instance as a professional nose, creating perfumes.

The inheritance from our ancestors the reptiles

It turns out that our sense of smell is the oldest sense we have and it’s also the last sense to go when we die… Our sense of smell is located in the part of the brain called the reptile brain, and we inherited it from our ancestors, who amongst other things used the sense to detect and identify danger, and to create trust and recognize allies. It makes sense to me, because I tend to automatically be on high alert when I register a smell I don’t like, and feel calm when I’m surrounded by a pleasant scent.

Modern scents – Friend or foe?

For several years, I would always have scent dispensers plugged into several outlets throughout my home, because I lived in a place, where I had quite smelly neighbors. Until one day, when I read about the effects the use of spraying cans have on our physical and mental health. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but the article said that there’s a close connection between using spray cans in and around your house and the likelihood of developing a depression.

I don’t use spray cans, and I’m not depressed, but the article inspired me to read the labels of my vaporizers, and what can I tell you? It wasn’t pretty.

The beautiful smells of Christmas, roses, hyacinths, lilacs and violets didn’t contain anything I knew nor could pronounce, but instead the labels had warnings about all the bad things that could happen to me, if I should get the stuff on my fingers and eyes or – God forbid – swallowed it. So, it was hazardous for me to touch and drink, but safe to inhale? It made absolutely no sense.

A fresh start

That day I threw out all my diffusers and the refills and returned to essential oils, because I still like my house to smell nice. I also use candles, just a few, and most of the time I don’t light them, instead I just leave them as they are, so they still fill the room with their beautiful scent.

For creating an even more natural and fragrant smell I use flowers: Hyacinths in the winter, lilacs in spring, lilies in summer and stephanotis in autumn. Their smell makes me happy, and they are beautiful to look at too. It doesn’t get any better.

And you don’t have to stop there; if you want to freshen up the air in your place continually, you can grow green plants in pots on windowsills, tables, shelves and where ever else you have room… If you don’t like too much of a hassle, buy plants that are easy to take care of… Boston ferns, rubber plants, split leave philodendrons, aloe vera, jades, snake plants, heart shaped philodendrons, ZZ plants and many more, and they even clean the air in your home efficiently while serving as a beautiful decor.
