Do you dare, Burlesque?

Yesterday, on a rare venture out of my safe country home, I found myself drinking coffee with a good, but newly acquainted friend of mine. As at most coffee dates with my female friends, we talked about everything going on in our lives… our individual businesses, our passions, the state of the female sensuality and of course love.

My friend is a passionate strip-fitness instructor and burlesque dancer, who teaches the art of sensual and seductive dance. By doing that she teaches women how to tune into their unique feminine sensuality and womanhood, and her dream is to do that full time at some point in the future.

She has her own personal style and persona as an artist and entertainer but – to paint a telling picture of what she does and who she is as a performer – she reminds me of the Danish and slightly more Fem Fatal version of Dita von Teese, the modern-day ikon and burlesque star.

Sensuality and femininity

We talked about the different endeavors in our respective lives, and about sensuality and sexuality, especially for women, and how we seem to have forgotten how to express it in our daily lives and that we need to create a space for it and love it as a natural part of our identity as women and as humans.

“Most women only view their sensuality and sexuality as something that needs an external ‘permission’ or ‘trigger’ to come alive,” my friend said”, like when having a partner. Normally it’s something we tend to hide away from others and ourselves, and we only allow it to show up when we need it, or when we want to seduce or tempt someone we love or like.”

That was a huge AHA moment for me, and I wonder why it is that so many of us have lost this ability to appreciate and live with our own sensuality and sexuality… and why we only use them in relation to another person?

Imagine what we would discover about ourselves, our body and our feelings, if we stopped ignoring such a big part of who we naturally are… Our sensuality and sexuality is a huge part of our mental and physical well-being and I believe in my bones that we need to pay more attention to this beautiful and feminine part of who we are, if we want to live a complete and satisfying life.

Through dance

Through her work, my friend often meets women who want to get to know, be introduced to or re-establish a relationship with their own feminine energy, sensuality and sexuality.

In her dance classes, she teaches the art of finding your own moves and that special feeling inside. According to her, there are no right or wrong ways, and she’ll never tell you to move in a certain way. The “right way” to do it, is what feels good to you and your body and nothing else.

Her intention is to create the right space for individuality and feeling safe

In the safety of the dance-class, women can trust that they can be themselves completely and have the freedom to get to know themselves on an often totally new level. She introduces them to a part of themselves that often has been ignored or buried way too long, and she helps them eliminate the need to fit into the norms of society.

I’m always searching for the truth to a good or better life and I’m passionate about discovering the truth behind how we as women can live our most spiritual, happy, satisfying, inspiring and loved life.

For a long time, most of my work and research has been centered on the internal and social aspects of creating a life that you love, but after talking with my friend about the importance of being able to express yourself through ways of moving your body, I believe that there is something here that is worth exploring. Something vital and important we have to remember, when we’re trying to improve the quality of our life and happiness… and some feelings just can’t be expressed through words. That’s where I believe dance or other rhythmical movement can play a huge part in living the life you love.

Do you have a healthy and positive relationship with your sensuality and your sexuality or do you tend to ignore it and feel embarrassed by that part of your femininity? Would you ever consider taking dance lessons in Strip Fitness or Burlesque in order to strengthen your confidence and your sensuality?
