Discover the Life-Changing Benefits of Having a Hobby

Do you have a hobby?

Maybe you have something you love doing in your spare time… maybe you’re more like me: where you love the idea of a hobby and know the importance of emerging yourself in a personal passion-based project, but almost never get around to doing it… or maybe you don’t see the idea of spending time on something, when all you want is to relax after a long, hard day?

I believe that one of the things that define us the most, gives us the most character and helps us live in somewhat of a balance; is what we do out of LOVE and passion… In this case, I’m not talking about what we do for a living, but what we do for fun and for ourselves.

Have you ever felt like waking up, as from a deep sleep, to realize that you don’t truly know yourself… like you’re missing out on a big part of your identity? I know I have!

Personally, I feel like I’ve got a good grip on my life, who I am and what I want for myself.

I know what I want professionally and I’m working on getting there… I feel confident about where my love-life is heading and I feel nourished and fulfilled by my social life… The only part of my life that I often feel is lacking behind is figuring out who I am in my spare time.

When no one is expecting anything from me and I can do whatever I want… that is when I seem to struggle the most. Who am I and what do I love to do?

Do I love sports? Do I love writing fiction? Do I love knitting colorful sweaters? Or do I love baking cakes?

I don’t really know… but I’m more than ready to figure this essential part of my life out, once and for all.

What I DO know: I hate the fact that I spend most of my spare time in front of a screen… or doing activities that don’t improve on the quality of my life…

In fact, there are a whole list of rabbit holes I tend to fall into – which in the moment seem pleasant and relaxing, but end up consuming my day and keep me from exploring more fulfilling activities and hobbies – rabbit holes such as social media, TV, my IPad and of course procrastination in general.

Is having a hobby even important?

Or, is it just another thing that will fill up your busy day and leave you more stressed out?

In my humble opinion; something you’re passionate about… that you love doing… that gives you inspiration and energy… that takes you away from your everyday chores… and allows you to re-connect with yourself… can’t be anything but healthy and beneficial to the overall quality of your life.

So, I’ve done some research and found overwhelming arguments for why it’s important to at least consider finding and pursuing a hobby.

The specific benefits of having a hobby:

Hobbies encourage taking a break. Hobbies offer an opportunity to take a break—but a break with a purpose.

Hobbies promote eustress. Eustress is that positive kind of stress, the kind that makes you feel excited about what you’re doing and about life.

Hobbies promote staying present. If you really love what you’re doing, you tend to get in the flow or zone and really, truly focus on the moment.

Hobbies have physical health benefits. Research has found that engaging in enjoyable activities during down time were associated with lower blood pressure, total cortisol, waist circumference, and body mass index. Engaging in these activities also correlated to higher levels of positive psychosocial states and lower levels of depression and negative affect.

It’s a Great Way to Build Confidence. Simply put, it feels great to be good at something. Although it may take some time to develop a hobby to the point where you feel confidently skilled, the success is in the journey itself and not the destination.

Hobbies help reduce or eradicate boredom. They give you something to do when you find yourself with nothing to fill your time. They also give you an activity that you can look forward to and get excited about.

Hobbies help you become more patient. To develop a new hobby, you need to learn how to do something that is brand new to you. Odds are there will be a learning curve, and you will need to be patient if you want to build your skills.

Hobbies provide an outlet for stress. Adding another activity to your to-do list might seem like a way to create more stress, but engaging in a new hobby actually provides a great way for releasing stress instead.

Just imagine getting off work, making a hot kop of coffee, and sitting down to devote an entire afternoon to doing what you love the most… something out of pure interest and pleasure.

How do you find a Hobby that fits your personality:

Look at your past. I’ve been introduced to this idea on several occasions and it makes a lot of sense to me.

If you find yourself unable to identify what you like to do and have no idea where to start… a good place is to consider your past. Are there things you enjoyed as a kid that you might still enjoy as an adult? Maybe you had an awesome record collection, loved to sew clothes for your dolls or were always out on your bike. Those are all things you could pick up again as an adult that would make great hobbies.

Go on a hunt. Not necessarily a real hunt with a bow and arrow – although that might be a perfect hobby for you – but something like a hobby hunt.

If something from your past doesn’t jump out at you, it might be a good idea for you to go out and look for a hobby. Visit your local library, the sporting goods store, the music store, crafts store or something completely different. Brows around and notice what jumps out at you and grabs your attention the most… there might be potential there and it could give you a clue as to what you might be interested in!?

Think of things you already like. You don’t necessarily need to re-invent the wheel when it comes to figuring out what your next hobby should be. Find something you like doing and figure out a way to expand on that interest.

If you love to look at beautiful photos, maybe you should pick up a camera and give it a try for yourself? Maybe you love cakes and watching videos of how cakes are made? Give it a go in your own kitchen, maybe you love baking just as much as you love looking at cakes?

Try out these tips and tricks, and see if they work for you… just by opening yourself up to the idea of introducing a new hobby into your life, I promise you will feel more fulfilled, present and true to who you truly are.

A hobby is a beautiful way of expressing self-love and acceptance, and you deserve to spend time doing something you truly love.
