Money, a Game Stopper?

One thing that always seems to stand in my way of progress, success and happiness, is money! There I said it… I’m not proud of it, but I have a rocky relationship with money.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve never been able to feel like I was on the winning side of the “Money Game”.

To be honest, to me money = sweaty palms, worry, doubt and negativity…. And even though I find it easier now than I did just 5 years ago, I still feel like I haven’t mastered the game.

When I think about money and the way it shows up in my life; what seems to pop into my mind is, the image of money slipping though my hands into.

No matter if you believe in ‘the law of attraction’ or ‘you attract what you think’, we both know that having this vision associated with money, can’t be a good. I strongly believe that if you ever want a chance to change or improve your relationship with money, you need to start with adjusting your attitude.

The magical money touch

Why is it that some people seems so frugal – even with no money at all – and always have money to spend on what’s important to them? And at the same time, you can’t hold on to enough money to pay for the essentials – like food – for the month to come?

Somehow, it seems like some people have figured out the secret to dealing with finances, while other – like myself – have a completely misunderstood relationship with my money.

No doubt, I’ve grown with the responsibility and I’ve upped my game – a tat – when it comes to surviving and making sure I stay alive for the length of the entire month… but I still struggle with my attitude towards money.

An attitude change might be good?

Money has such a big influence over the quality of your life. Not that you become happier and more fulfilled by having a lot of money – there are many instances that prove that fact – but it does give you a significant degree of freedom, to live the life that you long for.

If I don’t change my attitude towards money, I’m afraid I will never achieve the level of financial freedom that I need and want, in order to achieve my personal goals in life.

A money makeover!

But, what does a true money makeover entail?

I’ve done some digging, and from what I can tell there are a few areas that needs to be considered, in order to have a chance at cracking the code:

First… Adopt a new and improved relationship with money!

How do I do that? Affirmations, Meditation, Visualization or maybe I need to create a Money-Gratitude Journal?

First step… let’s try creating our own personalized ‘Money Positivity Affirmations’! I’ve dabbled in affirmations before, but I’ve never gotten in deep… so, I’ve never really seen what difference/miracles they can create.

In the process of creating my affirmations, I’ve created a ‘Money Positivity’ Affirmations work sheet. If you feel inspired to give it a go and test out, you can download the work sheet here!

Second… Set a weekly budget and STAY within that budget!

After watching several videos on YouTube, I’ve been inspired by a lovely lady called Jordan Page, the owner of FunCheapOrFree.com, to try the envelope-budget.

Because I love to design stuff… I’ve created my own pintable version of the envelope design. Click here to know more about the envelope budget + download the printable.

I highly recommend going to Jordan Page’s site/YouTube channel to check her out. She is just lovely and a breath of fresh air. She makes me believe I can actually do this… AND achieve my financial goal.

Third… Pay off debt. Yikes!

Face the consequences of an entire youth worth of bad financial knowledge and poor choices…

I know… this is the least fun part of getting any financial situation sorted… Paying back money!

I hate it, because it feels like throwing money down the drain.

I wish someone would have drilled this into my head as a teenager: When you enjoy the pleasures of spending money – money that you don’t have – the “high” of spending them is fast gone by the time you need to pay them back. Plus, you end up paying a ton of extra money for something you might not even remember anymore.

(of cause, there are exceptions… If debt is caused by buying a house, a new car or because of an emergency, then the situation might feel a bit different and paying off debt might not seem so negative or unnecessary.)

Experts advise, paying off debt first and then creating a saving account next… Yikes. The estimated amount – that I’ve been told – is to put about 30% of your paycheck straight into paying off your loan.

This seems like a stretch, but for the sake of finally reaching financially freedom, I’m willing to give it a try. Would you be willing to live without 30% of your paycheck?
