How I Stopped Obsessing Over Food and My Weight

I wrote a blogpost on the 6th of April called 4 Life Lessons on How to Love Yourself More and in lesson #3 I talked about how important it is to fuel your body the right way. I mentioned that if you wanted to know more about my food strategy and how I learned to stop my obsessing over food, you could leave a comment or send me an e-mail… a bunch of you replied, that you would love to know more, so this post is an explanation of How I Stopped Obsessing Over Food and My Weight.

Food can have a huge impact on the quality of your life, both in a positive way; like through family dinners, the big neighborhood barbeque party or when enjoying a really delicious cheese while sipping on a glass of white wine… but unfortunately – as most of us probably know – food can also have a significantly negative impact on us; like if for instance we let food become a struggle and a negative part of our day… maybe our self-confidence has been lowered by some extra pounds on our body or maybe we feel like food is the enemy and the reason for all our problems and challenges.

Since around my 7-year mark I’ve struggled with my weight… I began putting on weight and started noticing the change in how I was perceived and how my worth in the world seemed to change in the eyes of my peers. It was a huge wakeup call and my reality had forever changed because of the simple fact that I had gained a few more pounds.

As I began to approach the hormone-racing teenage years, my weight not only began to be a challenge in trying to find friends and be accepted, but now I had the challenge of being interested in boys as well.

Now, I do strongly believe that some extra weight is obsolete in finding love, and that even though you have some extra cushion on your body, you can still be attractive and sexy, but unfortunately what often seems to change is our own belief in the fact that we’re attractive, sexy and beautiful the way we are.

NOTHING IS MORE ATTRACTIVE THEN CONFIDENCE!

But unfortunately, as the scale goes up our confidence often goes down accordingly.

As a long-time fighter against my body weight, I reached a point a few years ago, where I got fed up with always having to chase the next big diet and the “correct” lifestyle change… and always telling myself that I wasn’t good enough and that I had to change.

The thing is, I HAVE AN AMAZING BODY… It’s healthy and strong, and it lets me live and experience the life that I love, and even though I have some extra weight I’m still beautiful and worthy of love, affection and beauty…

so, why was I telling myself that I needed to change and – oh, by the way, punish myself through food – to reach a body in which I could live the life of my dreams?

… A dream-life that I was well on my way creating, despite the extra weight.

THE CHANGE

I began thinking about the way that I approach food and my physical appearance, and instead of listening to a bunch of different opinions on how I “should” eat – to be healthy and lean – I began to use my own brain and COMMON SENSE and started respecting what my body needs and wants.

We are bombarded with information on how we “should” eat and it seems that every few weeks “THE REAL SECRET” to weight loss and healthy eating finally has been revealed through a new life-changing diet or approach.

I can only speak for myself, but it drives me crazy and it confuses me to the point where getting a meal at MacDonald’s seems like the easiest solution.

As I was starting to change my focus and the way I approached food I came across a Danish woman Named Suzy Wengel, who is a nutritionist and health coach based in Denmark, and her teachings inspired me and seemed to match my new-found approach to food, perfectly.

IT MAKES SENSE

Suzy Wengel, created the premise for the SENSE lifestyle and she wanted to help people rediscover a healthy relationship with food and help them understand the different food groups and how they work with and sometimes against our body and our health.

Everything is based on our common sense. You only need to eat to be healthy and full, and when you eat the right way, you won’t feel like you need anything else to satisfy you.

I used to love to snack during the day, but after I changed my diet and began to listen to what it is my body really needs that has changed dramatically and I don’t have cravings for chocolate or other foods. The amazing thing is that if you eat from all the important food groups like; protein, carbs and fats, and you make sure to eat a balanced meal, you will lower your cravings for food in-between meals and you will feel much more satisfied throughout the whole day.

HOW I EAT

The overall idea of how I eat and how the SENSE diet works is: I measure my food by what will fit in the palm of my “hand”. That makes it easy and convenient too.

I go by food groups and make sure to cover every food group in every meal… Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

WHAT I EAT DURING A MEAL:

This might seem a bit overwhelming and maybe even confusing, but as soon as you get a hang of it, it really starts to feel like second nature to you and what you will most likely discover is that you’re otherwise dominating cravings and sweet tooth in-between meals will lower dramatically and sometimes even disappear completely.

When you eat like this, you will be covered in every possible way and you don’t really need anything more… You have all the elements that you need in every meal. Greens, carbs, proteins and fats. You are completely covered and satisfied.

And it leaves you thinking/obsessing less about food throughout your day, leaving you time for the things that are truly important to you. You now have time and mind-space to focus more on living the life you really want.
