The Art of Aliveness and Living in Your Truth

A Few Days Ago…

“We’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget the inner value, the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it is all about.” – Joseph Campbell

A few days ago, I stumbled upon a video or rather… a TED talk by a man called Bruce Muzik that inspired me and made me take a good look at how I live my own life, what I portray to the world and how honest I am with the people in my life and with myself. In this video, he talks about the concept of being alive and living your honest truth.

Before you dive further into this article and video, it’s important that you really understand the definition of alive!

Alive, according to the dictionary:

Alive

-adjective 1. Having life; living; not dead or lifeless.

Alive, according to Bruce Muzik:

“It’s that feeling you get when you go up to somebody you really, really like and you ask them out on a first date. How many of you guys know that feeling? – Right? Heart beating like crazy! It’s that feeling you get when you’re doing extreme sport or when you take a risk that scares the living crap out of you… right!? It’s that feeling – that most people are tempting to buy – when they come to Las Vegas to gamble money at a casino… That temporary rush of ALIVENESS.

So, if we’re born with this innate ability to experience being alive… how come we don’t experience it all the time? Because we’ve become so good at looking outside of ourselves to get our fix of aliveness, that we’ve forgotten that we can self-generate it in any moment.

We look to get it from the TV… we look to get it from the internet… from extreme sport… from sex… from drugs… rock n roll… whatever it is! and as long as we look outside of ourselves to get our fix of ALIVENESS, it’s always going to be fleeting – here one second, gone the next.” Bruce Muzik

The Big Secret Nobody Wants to Tell | Bruce Muzik | TEDxSinCity

True Aliveness is Only Achieved Through Honesty

So many of us tend to live in a state of “I’m fine… I’m good” and put up a front to the world and our loved ones, in fear of disappointing, being rude, being a burden or coming across as imperfect…

We walk around with secrets – big and small – that keep us from being true to who we are, and that keeps us from truly connecting with the people we love because we tend to hide behind a mask… a mask that we believe is what the world wants to see.

Maybe you’re walking around with a secret about you being angry with a friend or loved one and you haven’t found the courage to tell them, and there’s a distance between you as a result? Or maybe you’ve lied to somebody close to you and you haven’t found the courage to tell them yet, and the love you once felt for them is fading away? Or maybe you’re still in the closet about being homosexual? Or maybe you’re hiding an addiction or a secret double-life that’s preventing you from connecting with other people in a meaningful way? Maybe you’ve gotten an abortion and you’re too afraid to tell your partner?

Whatever might be the case for you, if you ever want to feel alive and finally live your truth, you need to face your secret/lies and be honest about who and what you really are.

Off cause, facing up to your deepest secrets or untruths is easier said than done, but according to Bruce “To lie and to keep secrets is a fundamental part of being human and lying does not make you a bad person… and sharing your secrets and cleaning up your life CERTAINLY does not make you a good person! It just allows you to be authentically yourself and create a life worth living”

If we want to live a happy and fulfilled life, we need to own up to who we are and start living honestly in our own truth.

The Lesson Here is;

“Like anything worth having – self-liberation comes with a price, and here the price is to get out of your comfort zone… The thing that’s going to stop you from getting out of your comfort zone and experiencing the freedom and rapture of being ALIVE, is telling yourself “but I don’t have any secrets I’m hiding”, and maybe you don’t…

Maybe you’re one of those few people who are totally transparent and transformed, and there may be a few in the room.

But, I’d like you to consider this: Professor of phycology Robert Feltman at the university of Massachusetts is an expert at deceptions, and his research shows that when two people meet each other for the first time they lie – on average – three times every 10 minutes. So if at times we’re lying 18 times an hour… I invite you to consider that perhaps we’re all liars to some degree and we all have secrets, and the best we can do is NOT to try and stop lying… the best we can do – if we’re all liars – is to tell the truth about where we’ve lied and openly and honestly take responsibility for what we’ve done.”

By being honest about who we are and what we’re going through we’ll run the risk of someone taking a fence against us, disliking us or finding us selfish, but more importantly we will start to enter a space where there’s room to connect with ourselves and other people on an even deeper level.

As Joseph Campbell said: “the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it is all about.” Share your truth… be honest with the people you love and most importantly be honest with yourself. Life is too short to live in fear, secrecy, doubt and regret!
